If you have a local pastor and congregation, encourage them to be part of your planning. They offer you a continuing pastoral support network, and can participate both in your planning and in preparation for marriage. We are always happy to receive a letter or email from your pastor telling us they know you and support you in your desire to celebrate your marriage in Banff.
The Marriage Service belongs to the bride and groom and to the Church. Our role is to see that your integrity is honoured in the way you are being married, and the Church's integrity is being honoured. Within those two guidelines, and working from the two marriage liturgies of the Church (traditional and contemporary), you are welcome to customize the service to make it your own. The clergy do not really "perform your marriage." In the Christian understanding the bride and groom are the true ministers of the marriage.
Our role is to guide you through the service and lead your friends in your support in prayer. You are married in the eyes of God through the commitment you make to be husband and wife for the rest of your lives, by owning that commitment publicly before the world, and by living it. The marriage service, reflects those inner spiritual realities.
