Your most recent collection is so stunning — what was your inspiration behind it?
The mood began with a gorgeous floral painting, “Still Life of Flowers on a Marble Table” by Rachel Ruysch, 1716. I loved the contrast of lush flowers against a dark mysterious background, and translated this inspiration into floral embroideries, rich laces and layered details including a few butterflies, as insects were often part of this genre of art.
What styles do you predict will be most popular for brides in 2014?
Lace, romantic soft silhouettes, and back details.
What sort of bride do you have in mind when you’re creating your designs?
There is no one ‘type’ — just beautiful, individual, smart, creative, stylish, curvy, tall, petite, ethereal, funny, fabulous women!
Do you have a favorite gown from your most recent collection?
The Papillion gown is made of ivory beaded floral embroidery lined in pearl silk with a sheer back embellished with flowers and butterflies. The delicate beading is very classic, but it’s the surprise of the blooming “garden” back that makes this one of my favorites.
How much attention should a bride pay to trends when picking her dress?
Think about what makes you feel confident and beautiful. Look for those elements with a clear vision of how you want to present yourself to your partner on this very special day. Stay true, and go with what you love. Choose details that resonate with you, and it won’t really matter what is ‘in’. Trends come and go, but if you truly love your dress, or a particular style or theme, then you will always look back on the day and your photos with that same happiness.
Which celebrity would you love to dress?
In your opinion, how does a bride know when she’s found ‘the one’?
It is such a personal choice, and I think when a bride can settle down and listen to her own voice, she will know. Lots of people have opinions, but if you can quietly listen to yourself and think about your fiancé and what you want to say to him, surrounded by your loved ones on this very meaningful day, the choice becomes clear. Many times you can see the waves of emotion overtake a bride when she tries on ‘the one’. Sometimes in happy tears, sometimes in squeals of delight...everyone is different, but it’s a great privilege to see my work touch someone’s soul.
