Betty Draper: Suburbia Grace Kelly
Look-up “perfect housewife” in the dictionary, and a picture of blond, beautiful Betty would smile back at you – and probably offer you a Manhattan. Betty lives a seemingly privileged life – one that includes a dashing husband, two darling children, and daily gossip with the neighbours. Betty, who is played by the gorgeous January Jones, has a look that channels Grace Kelly and Sandra Dee – charming, feminine and conservative. You have this feeling that whenever Betty Draper appears on screen, a member of the Chordettes gets her wings.
Betty Draper: Icon: No one's this perfect - but let's try!.
Dresses that are fitted through the top, collared, snug at the waist but flare at the hips are “classic Betty”. Soft colours like white, yellow, peach and minty blue add to the sweet-as-candy perception Betty is desperate to give. The look is rounded out with a feminine three-quarter length cardigan, a pretty heel, a headband and some pearls.
Betty wannabes can snag the style lickety-split during a quick trip to the mall or web. Club Monaco’s Cotton Sophie dress in white ($179) has Betty written all over it (to truly authenticate the look, add a petticoat from Babygirl Boutique under the dress to give it fullness and use a white belt instead of the black one shown). A darling green Emma James cardigan ($69) can be found at Sears. A classic Stuart Weitzman white pump from Brown’s ($298) adds to this clean, feminine look. Add Carolee white pearl (stud earrings ($40) and a white pearl necklace ($40) from The Bay, pop a ribbon in your hair, and you’re Bettified!
Be a modern Betty: It's easier than you think to be this sweet!
Heading off to do something more active than making a pineapple upside down cake? When Betty has a busier day, we’ll sometimes see her in a cigarette pant and cardigan (seems to be a Betty staple!).
Gap’s yellow Clean-Cropped Pant at $37 is a steal as is Old Navy’s Sleeveless Button Front Shirt ($10) – so let yourself splurge by pairing it with the Banana Republic Monogram Cashmere Tie-Neck Cardigan for $195. While a white shoe is usually up Betty’s alley, you know she wouldn’t be caught dead in it after Labour Day, so cheat and get a lovely heel in “bone” – like Aldo’s Iracoubo sling ($70). Since Betty’s letting loose with pants and if you’re already at Aldo, go all the way and get a nostalgic salute of a purse, the Esromera Tote priced at $50.
Cigarette pant perfect: Ideal for shooting pigeons
The Skinny on Skinny: Slim-legged Jeans for Curvy Girls
There's been plenty of debate in our forums recently on whether the skinny jean can truly be worn by those blessed with a more 'womanly' form. We have been insistent; it can be done! Us girls of substance are absolutely able to wear form-fitting denim styles.
Pink Power: Shop For The Cure
As the most common cancer among Canadian women, breast cancer is a disease the Hitched! community is all too aware of. According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), one in nine Canadian women will likely develop breast cancer in their lifetime - approximately two thirds of these women are expected to live through it.
Ads Gone Mad
Mad Men is back on August 16th and in honour of the show we love so much, we dug up some rather dated commercials that were made during the time the show is set. Perhaps DDB, the ad agency that Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper is supposedly based on, were behind some of these.
Rufus Humphrey's Celebrity iTunes Playlist
For those who are not Gossip Girl fans, I apologize – this entire soundtrack will seem like one big inside joke to you. Instead, just think of it as an early 90’s rock flashback and ignore the quips (or join in the fun – Gossip Girl airs Monday nights on The CW and A-Channel at 8pm EST.). But for those who are already familiar with GG's Rufus Humphrey - a man who is proud to be both a dad and an aging lead singer of the fictional alt-rock band, Lincoln Hawk - this Bud’s for you.
Winter + Indoors + Him
So, the holidays are dunzo are you’re left with month after month of un-festive winter. This season is a bittersweet beast. On one hand, it’s peaceful. It’s crisp. It’s oh-so-Canadian. It inspires baked goods, log fires and cozy sweaters. On the other hand, it’s cold. It’s isolating. It’s dark. It inspires runny noses, shivers and cabin-fever.
