Mad Style

All About Undies

Before we dive into the fun styles of each leading lady, let’s address something they hold in common: structure. The actresses on Mad Men have mad figures – but regardless of their size and shape, they’ve all been outfitted in heavy-duty foundation garments (in fact, they’ve joked in interviews about the multiple layers of slimmers they wear). Waists that nip in as severely as you see on the show are rarely feats of nature – so if you truly want to mimic the style, you’ll need to think just as much about the under-things as the other-things.

In the late 50s and early 60s, the open-bottom girdle was very popular – and with good reason – those babies whittle waists and tummies in ways that Weight Watchers can’t. The trade-off, however, is comfort (although it’s been said that with time, you can ‘train’ yourself to get used to the feeling of being strapped in – I have my doubts). Those willing to take the plunge can look no further than Babygirl Boutique, an online shop that has the hots for vintage recreations. Discretely order the ultimate in shapewear here, along with matching garter-connecting hosiery in a few different colours and styles (including Plus). Modern alternatives (although infinitely more comfortable, they’re not quite as effective as underthings with boning) like the line from Silks Shape or Spanx, are available at department stores and The Shopping Channel (but between the two, go with the Silks Shape hosiery – better quality, lower price!).

As for bras, a good, structured fit is key. While the Bullet Bra was seen more in the 40s and 50s, the 60s saw the rise of lycra, underwire and the push-up style. On the show, the actresses are outfitted with longline bras – like the Rago available at Sears – as they provide added slimming through the ribs. However, if that doesn’t appeal to you, Wonderbra, the little Canadian company that could, became a sensation when it launched its Model 1300 plunge push-up bra in 1961. Wonderbra’s current Style 8300, available at most department stores, is remarkably true to the original.

To ensure that VPL is banished, consider also getting a slip – a fitted style or a simple silk one will do nicely.

There's been plenty of debate in our forums recently on whether the skinny jean can truly be worn by those blessed with a more 'womanly' form. We have been insistent; it can be done! Us girls of substance are absolutely able to wear form-fitting denim styles.

As the most common cancer among Canadian women, breast cancer is a disease the Hitched! community is all too aware of. According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), one in nine Canadian women will likely develop breast cancer in their lifetime - approximately two thirds of these women are expected to live through it.

Ads Gone Mad

Mad Men is back on August 16th and in honour of the show we love so much, we dug up some rather dated commercials that were made during the time the show is set. Perhaps DDB, the ad agency that Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper is supposedly based on, were behind some of these.

Rufus Humphrey's Celebrity iTunes Playlist

For those who are not Gossip Girl fans, I apologize – this entire soundtrack will seem like one big inside joke to you. Instead, just think of it as an early 90’s rock flashback and ignore the quips (or join in the fun – Gossip Girl airs Monday nights on The CW and A-Channel at 8pm EST.). But for those who are already familiar with GG's Rufus Humphrey - a man who is proud to be both a dad and an aging lead singer of the fictional alt-rock band, Lincoln Hawk - this Bud’s for you.

Winter + Indoors + Him

So, the holidays are dunzo are you’re left with month after month of un-festive winter. This season is a bittersweet beast. On one hand, it’s peaceful. It’s crisp. It’s oh-so-Canadian. It inspires baked goods, log fires and cozy sweaters. On the other hand, it’s cold. It’s isolating. It’s dark. It inspires runny noses, shivers and cabin-fever.
