Mad Style

by JEN BYCK

Let it be known – I love, love, love every Technicolor inch of Mad Men. Set in the early 1960s, AMC’s golden child has meticulously recreated life at an advertising agency in Kennedy-era Manhattan, all for our viewing pleasure. There are several ways a clever writer could reference this show for a smart, thought-provoking article: the rise of feminism, diversity in the workplace, the merits of advertising, living with adultery – unfortunately, dear reader, a clever writer you have not. Instead, this article is about the PRETTY, PRETTY things they wear.

You don’t have to be a fashionista to fall in love with the work of Mad Men’s wardrobe department (headed by Janie Bryant) – but even major designers have taken note – Michael Kors had an entire runway of Mad Men-inspired clothing this year. There’s been lots of talk about the styling of the boys on the show (a dead-sexy combination of tailored suits, French cuffs, slim lapels and skinny-ish ties) – but let’s gab about the ladies, shall we? Three fashion plates that resonate with the audience are that of Office Manager and curve-master, Joan Holloway, sweet but smart Jr. Copywriter, Peggy Olson, and too-perfect-for-words and wife-of-the-boss, Betty Draper.

If stalking eBay and etsy for originals doesn’t fit in your schedule or patience-level, what follows are some examples of what’s available right now online and at national retailers that can let any Hitched! girl emulate her favourite Mad Woman. All the stores selected are either located in Canada or welcome Canadian online orders (hurrah!).

Pink Power: Shop For The Cure

As the most common cancer among Canadian women, breast cancer is a disease the Hitched! community is all too aware of. According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), one in nine Canadian women will likely develop breast cancer in their lifetime - approximately two thirds of these women are expected to live through it.

Ads Gone Mad

Mad Men is back on August 16th and in honour of the show we love so much, we dug up some rather dated commercials that were made during the time the show is set. Perhaps DDB, the ad agency that Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper is supposedly based on, were behind some of these.

Rufus Humphrey's Celebrity iTunes Playlist

For those who are not Gossip Girl fans, I apologize – this entire soundtrack will seem like one big inside joke to you. Instead, just think of it as an early 90’s rock flashback and ignore the quips (or join in the fun – Gossip Girl airs Monday nights on The CW and A-Channel at 8pm EST.). But for those who are already familiar with GG's Rufus Humphrey - a man who is proud to be both a dad and an aging lead singer of the fictional alt-rock band, Lincoln Hawk - this Bud’s for you.

Winter + Indoors + Him

So, the holidays are dunzo are you’re left with month after month of un-festive winter. This season is a bittersweet beast. On one hand, it’s peaceful. It’s crisp. It’s oh-so-Canadian. It inspires baked goods, log fires and cozy sweaters. On the other hand, it’s cold. It’s isolating. It’s dark. It inspires runny noses, shivers and cabin-fever.
