Rufus Humphrey's Celebrity iTunes Playlist
by JEN BYCK
For those who are not Gossip Girl fans, I apologize – this entire soundtrack will seem like one big inside joke to you. Instead, just think of it as an early 90’s rock flashback and ignore the quips (or join in the fun – Gossip Girl airs Monday nights on The CW and A-Channel at 8pm EST.).
But for those who are already familiar with GG's Rufus Humphrey - a man who is proud to be both a dad and an aging lead singer of the fictional alt-rock band, Lincoln Hawk - this Bud’s for you.
As one clever Hitched girl pointed out in our Mixed Media forum, Rufus is firmly "entrenched in the 90s." Hilariously so. I keep hoping one day we’ll hear Rufus try to relay a moral to his kids through a 'back in the day' story that involves Lily, pre-fame Courtney Love and a broken beer bottle. It would be magics. Anyway, Rufus has become so cartoonishly 90s that every time old man Humphrey is on the screen, I can’t help but yell out band names circa 1988 – 1994 in the hopes that I’ll predict his next rock reference ("Screaming Trees! Teenage Fanclub! Frente! Dinosaur Jr! ... Uuuugh – it was Buffalo Tom.").
And now I’ve completely geeked out and went where all true nerds eventually find themselves: creating fan fiction. And lucky you, I’m going to share it. So imagine if you will, what would happen if iTunes invited Rufus Humphrey to participate in their Celebrity Playlist, a regular feature on Apple’s music store that lets celebs list what’s currently on their iPod. Here’s the imagined result:

(As images on Hitched articles can only be so big - here's the text):
“Waiting For Somebody” (Track 1): “I wish I wrote this song. Lincoln Hawk was *this close* to getting on the Singles soundtrack.”
“Two Princes” (Track 2): “When the kids and their friends are over, nothing makes them happier than this song and a plate of waffles. I can see it in their faces everytime I go to put the CD on - it’s just what ‘The Doctors’ ordered!”
“All I Want” (Track 3): “I listen to lots of Toad. It was hard to pick one song – but this track gets me everytime. Makes me think about the girl who got away.”
“Linger” (Track 4): “Hauntingly beautiful. I wonder what happened to this band? Maybe I’ll look them up on the World Wide Web.”
“What’s Up” (Track 5): “If you find yourself trekking across the city to have a one-minute conversation that could have easily been done over the phone, this is a fantastic song to keep you company.”
“Cherub Rock” (Track 6): “I thought Gish was pretty sweet, but Siamese Dream blew it out of the water. Billy, if you see this, give me a call – let’s catch up!”
“She’s So Young” (Track 7): “I played this tune a lot last year when my daughter was trying to legally emancipate herself from me. Great song.”
“Cannonball” (Track 8): “When the Luscious Jackson reunion didn’t pan out, we were invited to open for The Breeders on their revival tour. I had one word – “Deal!” (True rock fans will get my double meaning.)”
“Hey Jealousy” (Track 9): “I wish the jokers at Lollapalooza would get their act together and book these guys already.”
“No Rain” (Track 10): “Shannon Hoon, gone too soon. I still can’t believe it - what a harsh realm. I raise my Zima to you, friend.”

Cover Songs For Creativity
Whether you crunch numbers in a cubicle-lined office, volunteer on a committee or work in a creative field, new, good ideas are always a hot commodity. But let’s face it – they’re very tough to come up with on demand.
Ads Gone Mad
Mad Men is back on August 16th and in honour of the show we love so much, we dug up some rather dated commercials that were made during the time the show is set. Perhaps DDB, the ad agency that Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper is supposedly based on, were behind some of these.
Bitten & Smitten: Why Women Love Vampires
With the countdown on for the second season of True Blood (PVR Alert: HBO Canada, Sunday, June 14, 9pm EST), vampire fever is in the air.
Is It Summer Yet?
Alright … now this is more like it! The warmer weather is finally becoming a more frequent occurrence (unless you live in Saskatoon. Has it stopped snowing yet, ladies?) and we can start venturing out without a jacket. Well, some of the time.
Winter + Indoors + Him
So, the holidays are dunzo are you’re left with month after month of un-festive winter. This season is a bittersweet beast. On one hand, it’s peaceful. It’s crisp. It’s oh-so-Canadian. It inspires baked goods, log fires and cozy sweaters. On the other hand, it’s cold. It’s isolating. It’s dark. It inspires runny noses, shivers and cabin-fever.
