Mad Style

Joan Holloway: Dangerous Curves Ahead
My husband gets rather fixated when Joan (played by the stunning Christina Hendricks) is in a Mad Men scene. I don’t blame him. Smokin’, smokin’ Joan (a character largely inspired by Helen Gurley Brown) is smart, smooth and sultry. As the Office Manager, she rules the roost and strides with radiating confidence through the hallways of Sterling Cooper. The thing to notice about Joan’s look is that she values shape over skin. You don’t see a lot of cleavage, arms or above-the-knee action with Joan, but you do see every angle of her figure.
Joan Holloway: Driving men mad
You can mimic Joan’s fashion style with Banana Republic’s Monogram Cap-Sleeve Sheath in Tulip for $195. This style of dress is great for creating or strengthening an hour-glass figure – seaming at the waist, sturdy cap-sleeves to balance the hips and a slim A-line skirting. Joan’s accessories are almost always gold – check out the slim Timex Classics Goldtone watch from the Bay at $55, thick oval hoops from Sears for $39, and a large feminine gold brooch like this rose pin from The Shopping Channel for $189. Practice your best strut in tall red pumps – the Arnoldoa from Aldo is a great match for $90. The Lioni Clutch from Aldo ($40) is a nice added touch (although Joan’s need to carry a purse is moot when there are so many men in the office eager to buy her lunch).
Red hot: The devil's in the details.
The wool gabardine dress at J.Crew ($175) is actually the inspiration for this article. The dress screams Joan. The wide scoopneck is the perfect pedestal to show off an updo-exposed neck. Darts are just where they should be to emphasize the girls and the fitted waist of this dress adds to a womanly silhouette. One of Joan’s outfits in season one featured a gorgeous tie-neck top peeping out from her dress. Victoria’s Secret’s silk tie-neck blouse ($68) can give you this eye-catching style (although to be truly authentic to the look, you’d need to turn this into a sleeveless blouse – a very easy fix) – and is also available in red chili for those who aren’t into orange (shame on you!). Aldo’s Demetra open-toe pump in cognac ($70) and inexpensive costume jewelry from Avon’s Classic line will transform you into a Joan doppelganger (but unlike Joan, do try to avoid any office romances with married co-workers – you deserve better!).
If you got it: Flaunt it.
The Skinny on Skinny: Slim-legged Jeans for Curvy Girls
There's been plenty of debate in our forums recently on whether the skinny jean can truly be worn by those blessed with a more 'womanly' form. We have been insistent; it can be done! Us girls of substance are absolutely able to wear form-fitting denim styles.
Pink Power: Shop For The Cure
As the most common cancer among Canadian women, breast cancer is a disease the Hitched! community is all too aware of. According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), one in nine Canadian women will likely develop breast cancer in their lifetime - approximately two thirds of these women are expected to live through it.
Ads Gone Mad
Mad Men is back on August 16th and in honour of the show we love so much, we dug up some rather dated commercials that were made during the time the show is set. Perhaps DDB, the ad agency that Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper is supposedly based on, were behind some of these.
Rufus Humphrey's Celebrity iTunes Playlist
For those who are not Gossip Girl fans, I apologize – this entire soundtrack will seem like one big inside joke to you. Instead, just think of it as an early 90’s rock flashback and ignore the quips (or join in the fun – Gossip Girl airs Monday nights on The CW and A-Channel at 8pm EST.). But for those who are already familiar with GG's Rufus Humphrey - a man who is proud to be both a dad and an aging lead singer of the fictional alt-rock band, Lincoln Hawk - this Bud’s for you.
Winter + Indoors + Him
So, the holidays are dunzo are you’re left with month after month of un-festive winter. This season is a bittersweet beast. On one hand, it’s peaceful. It’s crisp. It’s oh-so-Canadian. It inspires baked goods, log fires and cozy sweaters. On the other hand, it’s cold. It’s isolating. It’s dark. It inspires runny noses, shivers and cabin-fever.
