Chuck

by STAFF

Chuck: Government op/spy? Oh yeah.Chuck: Government op/spy? Oh yeah. When I saw the commercials for this show, I was drawn to it. I couldn't help myself. Something about the absurdity of the whole concept - which they kept as mysterious as possible in the ads - made me giggle. Upon investigating, I discovered that it was also connected to that McG guy (yes, his name annoys me too) who did the Charlie's Angels movies. Oh, as silly as it was likely to be, that kind of silly is just the thing that this girl loves.

Better known as Kipp from Less Than Perfect, Zachary Levi plays the adorable title character - complete with $11/hour techie job, decidedly girl-free (other than his sister) lifestyle, and tiny nerd herd car, he is the consummate nerd. After opening an email from an old pal he'd lost touch with, things start feeling funny for Chuck. Funnier yet is that he finally gets asked out. By a girl. And a hottie-boom-bottie one at that.

So what's the deal? Well, of course, that would be the premise of the show. It turns out his long-lost buddy was a rogue spy who sent Chuck a brainload of information. On the date with his dreamgirl - another spy, natch - things turn from flirty to flighty as the couple gets chased down by guys with guns. The hottie saves him, some other spy guy holds a gun to him, Chuck starts to figure out what happened, and they save some army general type from his nearly explosive destiny using some weird computer nerd DOS override porn trick. Now the sole proprietor of all kinds of inside scoop, Chuck will presumably reluctantly become responsible for saving the world, one hotkey at a time.

I don't care how lame it sounds. Chuck is the kind of hero you can't help but love. The dialogue was freaking funny. The filming looked way better than television should. And they played The Shins. Le sigh.

Monday nights on NBC, this one is definitely worthy of your PVR's list.

Ads Gone Mad

Mad Men is back on August 16th and in honour of the show we love so much, we dug up some rather dated commercials that were made during the time the show is set. Perhaps DDB, the ad agency that Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper is supposedly based on, were behind some of these.

Rufus Humphrey's Celebrity iTunes Playlist

For those who are not Gossip Girl fans, I apologize – this entire soundtrack will seem like one big inside joke to you. Instead, just think of it as an early 90’s rock flashback and ignore the quips (or join in the fun – Gossip Girl airs Monday nights on The CW and A-Channel at 8pm EST.). But for those who are already familiar with GG's Rufus Humphrey - a man who is proud to be both a dad and an aging lead singer of the fictional alt-rock band, Lincoln Hawk - this Bud’s for you.
